Why Are Skunks Attracted to My Home and Yard?
Skunk prevention in Virginia starts with understanding what attracts skunks to your home and yard—food, shelter, and safe den sites.
If you’re seeing skunks in the yard, smelling skunk odor, or finding fresh digging under a porch or deck, you’re not alone. Skunks are usually attracted to homes for three reasons: food, shelter, and breeding season den sites.

1) Food Sources That Attract Skunks
Skunks are opportunistic omnivores. They will eat what is easy to reach, including:
- Grubs and insects in lawns (a big reason for digging)
- Pet food left outside
- Bird seed and spilled feed
- Garbage and compost
- Fallen fruit, berries, and garden produce
- Rodents (mice and rats), especially near sheds and barns
What to do:
- Feed pets indoors (or pick up bowls before dusk)
- Use trash cans with tight lids
- Clean up bird seed spills and consider a catch tray
- Pick up fallen fruit and secure compost
- If rodents are present, address them (rodents often attract skunks).
For rodent-related help, see rodent control in Virginia.
2) Shelter and Safe Hiding Spots
Skunks don’t usually “move into” the living space of a home, but they love protected voids such as:
- Under decks and porches
- Under sheds and steps
- Crawlspace openings
- Garage slabs and small gaps along foundations
- Brush piles, junk piles, and tall weeds
What to do:
- Remove brush piles and clutter near the house
- Trim vegetation away from foundations
- Close off openings along foundations and crawlspaces
- Install a proper barrier under decks/sheds to stop digging
For long-term prevention, see Virginia Animal Exclusion & Damage Repairs.
3) Breeding Season and Denning
Skunk activity often spikes when females are looking for a safe den to have babies. A quiet, protected area under a porch or shed is perfect for them.
This is one reason DIY block-the-hole approaches backfire. If babies are inside, you can create a much bigger problem fast.
What to do:
- Don’t seal an opening until you know it’s clear
- If you suspect babies, call a pro to handle removal and timing correctly
For help with active denning problems, see skunk trapping and exclusion.
How to Stop Skunks From Digging Under a Deck or Porch
If skunks are digging, the goal is to remove the skunk and block re-entry.
A strong prevention setup usually includes:
- Removing food attractants (pet food, seed, trash)
- Reducing lawn grubs if needed
- Installing an underground barrier (typically buried and bent outward)
- Sealing gaps and reinforcing weak areas
This is exactly what we do with professional trapping and exclusion work.

Do Repellents Work for Skunks?
Most repellents are short-term at best. They may reduce activity for a short time, but they rarely solve denning under a structure.
Also: mothballs are not a safe or reliable solution and can be harmful to people and pets.
Long-term results come from:
- removing the animal
- addressing the attractant
- installing a real barrier (exclusion)
What If You Already Have Skunks on Your Property?
Skunks can spray, and in Virginia they can also be a rabies concern. If a skunk is:
- living under a structure
- trapped in a window well
- repeatedly in the yard at night
- spraying pets
…it’s time to get professional help.
