Snakes fall into two categories – egg layers or live birthers. For egg layers, they will often seek out a safe place to lay there egg that offers the best combination of temperature and humidity. A snakes nest is usually in a grassy area, hidden from predators and humans who might destroy the eggs. The nest must also be warm enough to provide the eggs with the proper temperature to enhance the eggs development.

 

People often find these snake nests in their backyard or across the road in grassy areas where the snakes are located. The problem is that other types of eggs are often mistaken for snake eggs when they are actually from turtles, lizards, toads or other critters. They therefore do not know how to properly handle these situations. Some people are good at identifying snake eggs, but it is better to always call a licensed local snake expert to help with the identification process.

Here are our easy to follow steps if you find a snake nest in your backyard or in an area near your home:

• Don’t touch the nest or eggs. This is a very important. The mother snake may be near the nest site. Even if you do not see her around, mother snakes are very protective and we don’t want anyone to be bitten by a snake.

• Some snakes lay eggs and leave the nest open. The parent snake might have lost the direction to its nest, but certainly will find it’s way back.

• Contact a local snake removal company. They will be familiar with the various snake species in your area – both venomous and nonvenomous. They will know what to do with the snake eggs in the nest. The nest might also contain snakes that have already hatched from their eggs – be careful.

Do not make the mistake of thinking that baby snakes are harmless. Almost all snakes can bite and venomous baby snakes can be just as dangerous as the adults.
