Virginia Permits and Rules Matter

In Virginia, commercial wildlife control work is regulated by the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR) through the Commercial Nuisance Animal Permit (CNAP) program. CNAP holders are authorized (with conditions) to capture, temporarily possess, transport for humane dispatch (when appropriate), and manage wildlife causing property damage or health/safety risks, and it also allows removal of certain animal carcasses from private property.

Training and continuing education

DWR’s CNAP materials describe required training/testing for new applicants and continuing education/refresher options for renewals.

Bat work has additional requirements (important)

DWR’s CNAP materials note that bat conflict management services require bat-specific training (with limited exceptions) and outline approved course options and validity periods.

Bottom line: always hire a company that can show the proper credentials for the type of work being performed, especially for bats and other rabies-vector species.

Can I trap and relocate wildlife myself?

Virginia rules vary by species and situation. Also, relocation is not a “simple fix” and is often not allowed for many nuisance scenarios. It’s best to use a qualified professional who follows DWR regulations and permit conditions.
